Conservation in Sudan marine parks is built on partnership with the people who live alongside them. Local communities are central to protecting the Red Sea outstanding biodiversity, and their work is recognised through the IUCN Contributions for Nature platform.
Community conservation in action
- Mohammed Gol village — coastal residents participate in site monitoring, ecotourism and stewardship of Dungonab Bay.
- Dungonab fishing communities — local fishers contribute traditional knowledge and increasingly adopt sustainable practices that protect fish stocks and seagrass beds.
- Local ranger turtle monitoring — community rangers record turtle nesting on the parks beaches, feeding into regional research programmes.
- Women empowerment through ecotourism — building on the May 2026 UNESCO mission, vocational training and ecotourism create livelihoods while reinforcing conservation.
