UNESCO mission to Dungonab Bay strengthens community ecotourism

On 9 May 2026, UNESCO Representative to Sudan Mr Junaid Sorosh-Wali led an assessment and stakeholder engagement mission to Dungonab Bay – Mukkawar Island Marine National Park and the coastal community of Mohammed Gol, working alongside Red Sea State and federal authorities.

The mission focused on:

  • Community and women empowerment through ecotourism opportunities;
  • Vocational training for local residents;
  • Site management and monitoring of the World Heritage property;
  • Improved access to clean water for coastal communities.

The visit underlines UNESCO continued engagement with Sudan first marine World Heritage Site despite the ongoing conflict in the country, and reaffirms the international commitment to protecting the Red Sea outstanding marine biodiversity while supporting the people who live alongside it.
